REDF Announces New Three-Year Strategy
by Carla Javits, PresidentOver the years, along with so many of you, I have seen first hand that deep poverty in the United States is a life and death proposition faced by both children and adults. In communities a short distance from my home, senseless shootings have recently taken several young lives. Father Boyle, the visionary leader of Los Angeles' Homeboy Industries summarizes the truth that "There's nothing that can stop a bullet like a job."

CHP Enterprises Launches Operations
REDF portfolio group Community Housing Partnership (CHP) recently launched CHP Enterprises, a business venture with a mission to increase economic opportunity for formerly homeless people by providing employment opportunities in the field of property management. With a $350,000 grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, CHP will provide formerly homeless people, many of whom are residents in CHP housing, with job training and placement at residential buildings throughout San Francisco."The combination of job training and employment opportunities along with permanent affordable housing is the best way to help people escape the cycle of homelessness," said CHP Executive Director Jeff Kositsky... more »
Field Advancement Update
REDF Enterprise Manager Emily Bolton wrote an article entitled "Prospecting for Social Good: REDF's Due Diligence Criteria for New Portfolio Organizations" that was recently published in the Social Enterprise Reporter. Emily also conducted a webinar on the same topic for a dozen of REDF's peers. REDF's due diligence tool, "Matchmaker", was introduced and enthusiastically received.
REDF's business assistance to new portfolio group St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County (SVdP) was highlighted in a recent edition of The Nonprofit Times. REDF 2007 Farber MBA Intern Minakshi Rahsakrishnan (University of Virginia, Darden School of Business) was quoted summarizing how merchandising decisions are made at the nonprofit's thrift stores.
