Due to limited supplies, REDF does not sell hard copies of our publications. However, you can download them for free to learn more about the philosophy and practice of social entrepreneurship, venture philanthropy and the ever-changing nonprofit sector.
A number of publications have been written by the staff of REDF and members of the REDF Portfolio. Of special interest are the following:
Published in 2005 [PDF] 401KREDF supports an ongoing assessment process that involves face-to-face interviews with every enterprise employee at the time they are hired. Follow-up interviews continue at six-month intervals for up to two years after hire.
The Social Impact Report highlights findings from a range of outcome areas, based on data collected from every individual served by our portfolio enterprises.
Published in 2002 [PDF] 802KREDF published this paper on OASIS (Ongoing Assessment of Social ImpactS) as an invitation to other funders to examine their requirements and practices around social outcome measurement, and how they fund the capacity building necessary to produce high quality social outcome measures. The hope is that this will further the dialogue amongst nonprofit practitioners around how to improve service delivery to maximize quality outcomes and raise the level of practice and organizational effectiveness in the field as a whole.
Published in 2002 [PDF] 959KWhy does an organization serving 100 homeless youth per year close? This case study is about Youth Industry, its origins and development, and ultimately how and why it closed its doors.
Published in 2000 This set of publications captures REDF’s efforts to calculate the SROI within our portfolio of social purpose enterprises. Our SROI Framework is one attempt to analyze and describe the impact of these enterprises on the lives of individuals and on the communities in which they live.
Published in 1999 This collection was written by and about the REDF Portfolio of social enterprises. Each volume provides a variety of in-depth perspectives from long-time social enterprise practitioners and advocates.
Published in 1996 New Social Entrepreneurs: The Success, Challenge, and Lessons of Nonprofit Enterprise Creation was written to provide a report to the growing number of people interested in nonprofit business development. Not intended as a definitive statement but as a “report from the trenches,” it chronicles the work of the Homeless Economic Development Fund (HEDF) from 1990-1996.
Here are a few additional publications written by REDF staff prior to 2002.
