Buckelew Programs is a nonprofit organization operating in Marin, Napa, and Sonoma Counties in California. Founded in 1970, the organization helps individuals with mental illness to live, work, learn and participate fully in their communities. Buckelew’s core belief is that any one of us can be impacted by a mental illness, and that if we are, we still deserve the opportunity for full participation in all aspects of our society. Buckelew Programs serves over 1,000 individuals with mental illness through a variety of programs including affordable, supportive housing, wellness and recovery supports, family supports, specialized programs, and supported employment. Around 500 individuals lived in Buckelew’s supported housing in 2010, and over 150 individuals were competitively employed as a result of Buckelew’s evidence-based supported employment program. 90% of Buckelew’s clients avoided psychiatric hospitalization, which greatly exceeds the national norms. Buckelew Employment Services include pre-employment counseling, vocational training, job development, placement, and job coaching. With two social enterprises in operation(Blue Skies Cleaning Service and Blue Skies Café), as well as its successful staffing agency Blue Skies Personnel Service, Buckelew is poised to focus on larger scale growth and job creation. REDF’s work with Buckelew Programs Buckelew Programs is starting a new large-scale social enterprise focused on fresh-cut produce processing, called People’s Harvest. With the help of REDF, People’s Harvest is ready to launch in the beginning of 2012. Additionally, REDF is helping Buckelew grow its Blue Skies Cleaning Service and Café to employ even more people with mental illness.
